The Process

What to Expect After a Loss

At DKI – Meco Construction, we understand that the aftermath of a fire, flood, storm, or mould event can be overwhelming. Our goal is to guide you through the process with professionalism, compassion, and clarity—so you always know what to expect and feel confident in the restoration journey ahead.

Immediate Response & Safety Assessment

When you report a loss, our priority is to assess the safety and habitability of your property. Our certified team evaluates for:

  • Structural damage
  • Mould or biohazard presence
  • Sewer backup contamination
  • Smoke toxicity
  • Potential risks to health-compromised individuals
  • Overall stability and safety of the building

Only once your property is deemed safe will we begin mitigation efforts.

The First 24 Hours

Following a fire or significant water event, our team works quickly to secure and prioritize your most essential belongings, such as clothing, medication, and other personal items. Our aim is to return these to you within 24 hours or sooner, so you have what you need right away.

If your home is temporarily uninhabitable, your insurance adjuster will help you understand whether your policy includes coverage for additional living expenses, such as temporary lodging.

We recognize that your home is a private space. Every member of our team is committed to treating your property with dignity, care, and respect at all times.

Clear Communication & Paperwork

To ensure a smooth process, you will be introduced to key documentation:

  • Work Authorization: Required to begin emergency services such as water extraction, drying, air scrubbing, and stabilization. This agreement authorizes DKI – Meco Construction to begin work.
  • Insurance Coordination: Your insurance adjuster will assess damages, explain your policy details, and record a formal statement about the incident.
  • Deductibles: You are responsible for the deductible specified in your insurance policy. This amount applies once per claim, regardless of how many items are affected.

If no insurance funds are available, you will be responsible for payment of the services rendered.

As part of our DKI Canada membership, you will receive a Completion Certificate at the end of the job, along with a warranty, giving you peace of mind that the work is done right.

Contents Pack Out & Protection

In certain situations, we may need to remove and transport items to our climate-controlled facility for specialized cleaning and restoration. This process is known as a Pack Out and typically includes:

  • Clothing & bedding
  • Electronics
  • Sentimental or delicate items

A full inventory list is created and reviewed with you before any items leave your home or business. You are welcome to be present during the pack-out and will be asked to sign off on the inventory. If you are unavailable, you may authorize removal by signing a disclaimer and will receive documentation afterward.

We kindly ask that you:

Identify items of high personal or sentimental value

Remove any personal or private items in advance

Note that dangerous goods (such as propane, paints, or aerosols) cannot be transported due to Transport Canada regulations
